Sunflowers and Stuff

I took today off as I had some vacation time to burn off.  I thought I would head up to the farm and check things out as I hadn’t been there since last year.  One new thing is that I learned is that Grandma has rented out some land to a Chinese restaurant owner.  A lady came by at the  beginning of the season  and set up her plot.  There are makeshift trellises using large sticks and there also irrigation gullies.  I'm fairly certain these are farming techniques she learned from her homeland. The trellises, frankly, are ugly.   I thought it looked medieval and… evil .   Kudos for using all natural materials but the effort in setting these up compared to post and wires seems too much.   Also, I don’t see how this structure is going to last for next year.   Unlike post and wires, this mess is going to have to be cleaned up.   I dunno, maybe they last but I’ve never dealt with something like that. The irrigation gullies are a good idea but really not necessary.   The plot b

While Michigan State was getting murdered by Notre Dame, I was watching the movie, The Way Back .  I couldn't watch the game because it is on ABC channel 57 which doesn't broadcast far enough into Michigan where I live.  So what do I do?  Watch a movie and The Way Back , I thought, was excellent.  Check out the trailer: h/t to Clevver Movies for uploading to YouTube.

Local Doesn't Know the Lake He Lives Next To.

This past Thursday was the last warm and sunny day forecasted for a while so I planned to go to the beach and squeeze it in just in case the warm weather didn't return.  On the night previous, I was talking to a local guy on the internet.  I hadn't been talking to him long but I mentioned that I was going swimming.  Quickly and slickly he asked if he could come along.  Now he hasn't given me any reason not to meet him.  No creepy vibes but pretty shameless I guess.  So I said fine and we made plans to meet up. So Thursday arrives and he comes to my apartment.  We set off for the beach and he is clearly not prepared.  He doesn't have a towel which all good travelers know-you must never leave home without.  He's wearing sneakers and socks--not good for walking in sand.  We go anyways.  We get there and he says, "so this is a great lake?  Which one is it?"  I swear he had to have seen my jaw drop.  He's lived in the area for how long and he doesn'

I Could Use Some Wisdom

I was skimming various wikipedia entries on Greek mythology and I noted Athena's involvement with Odysseus.  I got to thinking that if I were to have a patron god (or goddess), it would be Athena.  Mostly, it is due to her connections with wisdom, strategic warfare, and justice.  I asked my sister which god she would want and I had a hunch that she, too, would choose Athena.  Turns out I was right. Apparently Athena was not with me today.  As I was pulling my clothes out from the dryer, I heard a clang from the floor.  I looked down and saw my iPod's plastic protective case.  My heart sank because that must have meant... you guessed it... I washed and dried my iPod.  It didn't take me long in digging to find this hot chunk of glass and metal.  I was sort of calm about it.  I wasn't angry, just sad, because I had bought the thing this past spring.  Also, it was my fault for not checking my pants pockets as thoroughly as I had.  $300 just went up in a puff of hot air
