Man who faked his own death in St. Joseph found dead of drug overdose

A man accused of faking his own death on a pier in St. Joseph, Michigan has actually died.

Joel Johnson, of Jackson, Tennessee, died on September 26^th of a possible drug overdose. Jackson Police say they found him dead on his kitchen floor with empty pill bottles scattered around him.

Back in January, Johnson faked his death. While visiting relatives in St. Joseph, Johnson's wife called police saying her husband fell off the pier into Lake Michigan.

Rescue crews searched for his body for days only to discover the whole thing was a hoax. Johnson was found alive in Tennessee a few months later.

He allegedly faked his death to collect insurance money. Now, he has died and while police suspect suicide, they're considering the death suspicious. Johnson was to stand trial for insurance fraud, later this month.
