The Fat Tax is Just Around the Corner

The mayor of Detroit, Kwame Kilpatrick.

I saw that my cousin came across my blog recently. Jason, I hope that you found some of it to be interesting. While going through the news services, I came across one that I will post just for you.

Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick wants to add another 2% tax onto fast food service. Yup that is in addition to the 6% state sales tax. Rush calls this a fat tax, something that he had predicted in 1995 when cigarettes were openly being over-taxed. It uses the same argument that taxes are supposed to discourage people from their vices. Bullshit. It’s just squeezing more money from products and services that the government knows people won’t give up. It’s quite ingenious and insidious. When this whole tax thing got out of control with the tobacco companies, the states said that they were going to use the money to fund anti-smoking programs. Then when they won the multi-billion dollar suits, they said that they were going to use that money for more anti-smoking programs. Where has the money gone? The general fund, merit scholarships, and who knows where else. A mere fraction of it went where it was supposed to go. If you think this fat tax is going to fund anti-obesity programs… think again. I would especially be wary when Detroit is facing one fiscal disaster after another. They are just looking ways to bring more money into the coffers. But, hey Kwame, why don’t you just stop spending so much money on yourself?

Detroit residents, voice your disapproval by calling (313) 224-3400 or writing to mayor@mayor.ci.detroit.mi.us. Oh, and if you care… the next mayoral election is this November.

Original Story.

Wasn't this guy voted one of America's worst mayors? Now - let's see them define fast food. Does the take-out section of Outback qualify?
