I’m Not Taking That Trip

I bought into the hype and decided to see the new move, Avatar. From what I understood, it was supposed to a bad ass movie with state of the art special effects. It was even going to be shown in 3-D! I thought it was a yawn-fest.

It is a visually pleasing movie. The world of Pandora looked lush and wonderful. I was impressed with the plant life with its bioluminescense than with the animals which to me, were mutant forms of dogs, horses, and rhinos. Computer generated images aren’t quite up to the believable stage but this movie brings it close. Special effects with the human tech was very believable, however, and I kinda want one of those power suits for next Christmas!

My main gripe with the movie was that once you know the basic plot, it is entirely predictable. For a while, I was scratching my head thinking that this was like some movie I watched when I was young. After reading another critical post that mentioned FernGully, then it hit me. Also the moral of the story, I thought was insulting. This movie is basically the guilty-white-man-movie. I'm serious, it feels like Cameron was making an apology to all the Native Americans, Africans, and other indigenous populations for the Europeans coming in, killing them, and draining out the resources. I’m sorry but I’m not going to the movies to ride on a guilt trip.

Since we decided to go to a 3-D showing, our two tickets alone cost $17.50 which I think is quite outrageous. I know I did say that the movie is visually pleasing, the 3-D effects weren’t that great, or actually needed, in my opinion and that a 2-D picture should suit everyone just fine. If I had known that, I would have paid $7.00 for the two of us at Wonderland in Niles.

That was our thought as well, though I thought it was borrowing from Speaker for the Dead a little. The difference is that 2 tickets in Indy cost $25. Ahh the joys of city living.

I still want to see it...does that make me a rebel, even after everyone has told me that I should just wait to get it on DVD?
